Job Description:

The Audio-Visual Technician is responsible for providing technical execution of moderately complex live events across campus, including academic ceremonies, athletic events, performances, and other special programs.

This role supports high-quality in-person and live-streamed/broadcast productions by ensuring the reliable performance of audio, video, lighting, and streaming systems, and by overseeing control room operations during live events. Responsibilities include managing production workflows, monitoring system performance, and ensuring seamless coordination of audio, video, and broadcast elements.

Additionally, this position serves as a liaison with the Fine Arts Department and the Office of Information Technology (OIT) to coordinate technical needs for a wide range of campus and athletic events.

Responsibilities:

Live Event Production

  • Set up, operate, and strike AV systems for live events, including audio, video, lighting, and projection.

  • Execute run-of-show in coordination with events team, stage managers, and campus stakeholders.

  • Provide on-site technical support for high-visibility events, including commencement and athletics.

Control Room Operations

  • Oversee and operate control room systems during live productions.

  • Manage video switchers, audio consoles, intercom systems, playback, and graphics systems.

  • Monitor signal flow and ensure proper routing of all audio and video sources.

  • Coordinate timing and transitions between live elements, recorded media, and graphics.

  • Troubleshoot technical issues in real time to maintain production continuity.

Streaming & Broadcast

  • Configure and operate live streaming systems, including hardware encoders and software platforms.

  • Support multi-camera productions, including camera operation and switching.

  • Monitor stream quality (audio/video sync, bitrate, latency, signal integrity).

  • Ensure compliance with platform requirements for external streaming or broadcast partners.

Technical Setup & Maintenance

  • Install, maintain, and test AV systems in event venues and performance spaces.

  • Perform preventative maintenance and routine system checks.

  • Diagnose and resolve equipment and system issues; escalate as needed.

Event Coordination

  • Collaborate with campus partners to assess technical needs and determine production requirements.

  • Participate in planning meetings, site visits, and technical rehearsals.

  • Advise clients on AV capabilities, best practices, and production standards.

Collaboration & Support

  • Serve as a liaison with the Fine Arts Department and OIT to coordinate shared resources and technical support.

  • Train and supervise student technicians and part-time staff.

  • Provide customer-focused service to faculty, staff, students, and external partners.

  • Other duties as assigned in furthering the mission of the department or institution

Minimum Qualifications:

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s degree in Audio Engineering, Broadcast Production, Communications, or related field.

EXPERIENCE

  • 3+ years of experience in live event production with lighting, musical or stage, and events (i.e., headliners, production shows, conventions, TV broadcasts, movie productions, or sporting events).

  • Ability to have a flexible schedule and work weekends and holidays.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Experience operating control room equipment and live production systems.

  • Working knowledge of audio systems, including microphones, mixing consoles, and signal flow.

  • Familiarity with video systems, including cameras, switchers, and projection.

  • Experience with live streaming tools and workflows.

  • Basic understanding of AV networking and signal distribution.

  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, especially in live environments.

  • Ability to perform under pressure and manage multiple priorities simultaneously.

  • Attention to detail and commitment to high production standards.

  • Effective communication and teamwork across technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Ability to work flexible hours, including early mornings, evenings, and weekends.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in higher education, athletics, or live broadcast environments.

  • Familiarity with streaming or broadcast platforms (e.g., ESPN+ or similar).

  • Experience with IP-based video/audio systems (e.g., NDI, Dante).

  • Knowledge of lighting systems and basic rigging.

  • Industry certifications (e.g., CTS – Certified Technology Specialist).
