Job description
The Quality Manager in the event fabrication workshop will ensure that custom-built, event structures meet client specifications, safety standards, and structural integrity requirements before leaving the workshop and thereafter at the site. This role bridges the gap between creative design, project management, and structural safety.
The Quality Manager will establish, implement, and maintain rigorous quality assurance control procedures for all fabrication, from raw materials to final, installed products. The role involves inspecting bespoke designs, ensuring structural safety, and fostering a "correct at source" culture to reduce rework, meet tight installation deadlines, and maximize client satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities
- Quality System Management: Develop, document, and enforce a quality management system with standard operating procedures (SOPs) for carpentry, metal fabrication, printing, foam, and painting, and assembly at workshop and site.
- Pre-Production/Design Review: Participate in design reviews to ensure feasibility, identify potential structural issues, and ensure compliance with safety, legal, and environmental standards.
- In-Process Inspections: Conduct routine, in-process audits of fabrication work to identify deviations early.
- Final Inspection & Release: Inspect completed, bespoke event structures for cosmetic, structural, and functional compliance before shipping.
- Supplier & Material Quality: Inspect incoming raw materials to ensure they meet specifications.
- Corrective Action & Rework: Lead investigations into non-conforming items, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
- Health & Safety Compliance: Work with the production team to ensure all fabrications adhere to health and safety regulations, including electrical safety for scenic elements.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate records for client certifications, material traceability, and safety audits.
- Project Liaison: Coordinate with project managers and clients to resolve quality issues and manage expectations.
- Experience: 10+ years as a Quality Assurance / Quality manager, preferably in event fabrication and construction environments.
- Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of metal fabrication (welding) and/or carpentry, finishing techniques, and technical drawing/blueprint interpretation.
- Certifications: ISO 9001 lead auditor training is highly desirable.
- Problem-Solving: Ability to resolve complex technical issues under tight deadlines.
- Leadership: Experience leading a small team of technicians, inspectors, or assemblers.
- Computer Skills: Proficiency in MS Office (Excel) for reporting, interpretation of engineering drawings, and experience with CAD/CAM software is a plus.
- Proactive, solution-oriented mindset with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Typical Working Conditions
- Environment: Must be able to work in a workshop environment, which may include loud noise, dust, and heat, with some on-site installation work.
- Hours: May require working evenings, weekends, and holidays to meet event deadlines.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle tight deadlines and to work on site, which may include lifting, standing for long periods, and working in varied conditions.
