AECOM’s Water Business Line is seeking a creative and highly motivated Civil Design Team Leader specializing in site civil work, grading earthwork and pipeline design for immediate employment based in the Denver office. This is a technical and supervising role working with engineers, project managers, and direct staff on a variety of projects within the Mining Division. Candidates can expect a diverse set of project challenges focused on heavy civil, grading, roads, dams, utilities, and pipelines for large mine sites.
The ideal candidate will have a passion for supervising, mentoring staff, interdisciplinary collaboration in leading civil designs, producing custom solutions, and developing figures, drawings, material take-off quantities, helping on reports, and specifications for the civil design work on exciting and complex mining projects.
Job Summary/Responsibilities
The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
- Serves as a fully capable professional in the field with minimal direction.
- Applies advanced knowledge to develop design procedures, software, and tools to support high-quality, cost-effective project delivery.
- Develops estimates of technical effort for projects.
- Manages communication and collaboration with the full design team and clients.
- Conducts interdisciplinary reviews of project deliverables.
- Oversees development and implementation of technical approaches for complex work requiring ingenuity and creativity.
- Initiates project designs and plans, including preparation of presentations and design drawings.
- Prepares designs, calculations, sketches, diagrams, schematic drawings, and working drawings.
- Exercises considerable latitude in determining technical objectives of assignments.
- May oversee and guide less experienced designers.
- Meets with clients and oversees project execution to ensure client needs are met.
- Leads development of engineering drawings from initiation through completion in accordance with codes, standards, and design criteria.
- Develops and completes design assignments and engineering drawings of moderate to high complexity under limited supervision.
- Applies a solid understanding within a specific discipline, including codes, permits, and relevant software.
- Understands design and drawing preparation processes using project specifications and established standards.
- Reviews vendor and supplier documents for accuracy and understands their role in project delivery.
- Demonstrates knowledge of cost estimating, material take-offs, and budget support activities.
- Understands project change control processes and identifies potential changes.
- Maintains knowledge of discipline-specific equipment and material lists.
- Extensive experience with Autodesk Civil 3D (through 2025), including advanced surface and pipeline modeling.
- Translates general direction and conceptual sketches into complete design deliverables.
- Mining: grading design, surface modeling, and site development for tailings storage facilities, dams, embankments, seepage ponds, utilities, and related infrastructure.
- Civil/Site: site development, roads, drainage, dams, slope stabilization, retaining walls, detention ponds, and stream restoration.
- Prepares detailed calculation packages for earthwork quantities, reservoir storage, and tailings capacity.
- Processes multiple data sources (LiDAR, survey, DEMs, contours) to develop existing conditions models.
- Demonstrates strong understanding of coordinate systems and data transformations.
- Manages survey and client data throughout the project lifecycle.
- Performs routine and complex design tasks requiring judgment and problem-solving.
- Provides leadership and direction related to CAD technologies for project teams.
Minimum Requirements
- BA/BS + 6 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education
- Valid U.S. Driver’s License
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong technical progression within civil engineering and design.
- Comprehensive knowledge of industry standards.
- Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC)
- ProjectWise
- Microsoft Excel
- Google Earth
- NavisWorks
- ESRI GIS, Blue Marble Global Mapper or other GIS applications.
- Experience with other software a plus:
- InfraWorks
- Vehicle Tracking
- ReCap
- Bluebeam
- MicroStation OpenRoads, OpenGround, GeoPak
