Our Sterile Processing Department is a critical unit responsible for the lifecycle management of medical instruments and equipment. Responsible for providing clean, properly packaged, sterile instruments and supplies to meet individual customer needs.

What You'll Do

Essential Functions

Assessment: Reviews surgical schedule to identify patient/procedure needs. Monitors instrument and reprocessing equipment functions using mechanical, chemical, and biological monitors.

Planning: Collaborates with Clinical Coordinators, Inventory Control Specialist and OR Desk Coordinator to ensure availability of instruments. Monitors progress of daily surgical schedule to identify additional patient/procedure needs. Prioritizes and organizes work based on customer needs.

Processing: Utilizes PPE to minimize exposure to hazardous materials and contaminated waste. Disassembles all complex instrumentation. Sorts for automated or hand cleaning all contaminated instruments generated from the operating room, other areas of the hospital and Novant Medical Groups. Cleans all contaminated instruments following manufacturer's recommendations and department standards. Inspects all instruments for functionality and damage. Learns names of all instruments. Reassembles all instrument sets and other instruments utilizing count sheets and/or lists. Packages all items to be sterilized according to department standards and the method of sterilization. Sterilizes all reusable instruments following manufacturer's recommendations and department standards. Maintains, operates and monitors all reprocessing equipment according to manufacturer's recommendations and department standards. Completes and maintains records of all sterilizer functions according to departmental standards. Cleans equipment using manufacturer's instructions for use throughout the medical center.

Coordination: Utilizes resources judiciously and in a cost-effective manner. Assists in the inventory and maintenance of instruments and supplies. Participates in process improvement. Participates in the orientation of new personnel.

Communication: Keeps co-workers and intra-op staff informed of any updates/issues. Collaborates with the leadership team and UCIC to identify and resolve unit issues.

Non-Essential Functions All other duties as assigned.

What We're Looking For

  • Education : High School Diploma or GED, required .
  • Experience : Two years of experience in a hospital Sterile Reprocessing Department, required .
  • Licensure/Certification: Sterile Reprocessing Tech certification, required. CBSPD, CRCST or CSPDT, required .
  • Additional Skills (required): Ability to successfully complete generic and department-specific skills validation and competency testing. Demonstrates knowledge of instrumentation and sterile/aseptic technique. Ability to read and comprehend written instructions to assemble instrument sets and trays. Ability to learn and understand medical terminology. Maintains Sterile Processing Technician certification.
  • Work schedule (required) : Must be able to work both 1st and 2nd shift
  • Must have reliable transportation – will float between the 9 coastal facilities
  • Must maintain accurate and thorough documentation with attention to detail
