Well-Being & Disability Advisor
VCA Canada Animal Hospitals
Support Office - Calgary, Alberta
Position : Hybrid (office/remote)
Reports to: Manager, Associate Experience

Overview
Reporting to the Manager, Associate Experience, and collaborating closely with the People & Organization advisory team and hospital leadership team across Canada, the Well-being and Disability Advisor plays a pivotal role in fostering a culture of well-being and support at VCA Canada. The position involves providing coaching and guidance to leaders on matters impacting health, benefits, and overall well-being to engage and support the psychological, physical, financial, and total well-being of our Associates. The successful candidate will be instrumental in implementing absence management best practices and processes, managing all leaves of absence, and administering benefits related to health and well-being.
- 70% Leave and disability management
- 20% Advisory services to Associates, managers and HR team
- 10% Project, process improvement, well-being content curation
Responsibilities
- Builds trusting relationships with Hospital Managers and Regional Operations teams
- Proactively engages stakeholders by creating and presenting business cases for improvements to the Associate experience as it relates to well-being, followed by the implementation of these new programs and initiatives.
- Develop and refine processes to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of absence administration.
- Establishes a well-being framework for VCA Canada that meets or exceeds the National Standard of Psychological Health and Safety.
- Manages leave of absence lifecycle, ensuring all parties involved are informed of benefits support eligibility, medical documentation requirements, and return-to-work planning, including the management of limitations/restrictions.
- Recommends and coordinates appropriate assessments and evaluations, including Functional Capacity evaluations, and Independent Medical Examinations.
- Remain current in best practices related to disability claims management, accommodation, and Human Rights Legislation.
- Leads Well-Being @ Work Committee and partners with the executive and leadership teams on creating and promoting an inclusive well-being culture to support Associates.
- Advocates for the needs of our Associates and liaises with internal and external stakeholders such as MVH Well-Being Committees, external health advocacy groups, and service providers on providing an industry-leading well-being culture.
- Provide day-to-day support, coaching and guidance to Associates and managers.
- Curate well-being content for communication spotlights, monthly well-being topics and meaningful resources.
- Coach leaders to inspire a culture of appreciation and well-being.
- Liaise with benefit providers and assist with the transition of benefits for acquisitions.
- Assist with communication, re-enrollment and changes Associated with the annual benefit review process as needed.
Education and Experience
- Undergraduate degree in Human Resources Management, Psychology or health-related degree
- CHRP and/or CEBS are considered assets to this role
- Minimum of 3 years providing HR Advisory to client groups in multiple provinces
- Strong Associate and client experience focus
- Advanced communication skills (verbal, written, presentation) with the ability to interact and build relationships with all levels of the Associate and management
- Demonstrated ability to resolve complex HR issues
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Advanced knowledge of human rights laws as they apply to disability management
- Advanced communication skills, including written communication, presentation, and facilitation
- Exceptional interpersonal skills to facilitate successful working relationships involving sensitive information with a wide variety of team members
- Ability to present to all levels of management
- Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities from multiple stakeholders
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Excellent attention to detail, and excels in analytical thinking and problem-solving
- Ability to travel intermittently up to 10%
- Bilingualism (English/French) is considered an asset to this role
