Job description

Company Overview:

Barnhill Contracting Company’s success is built on the values, principles and vision of the man – Robert E. Barnhill, Sr. – whose name we proudly bear.  Robert Barnhill built this company on a foundational belief that there is power in people. He was a motivator. A hard worker. A leader of leaders. His passion for people and his firm belief in the Golden Rule – treating others as you want to be treated – still drive us today. We are firm, flexible and honest. We do the right thing, every single time. We empower our leaders in the field to be decision makers. We are easy to work with – a core philosophy that is both intentional and deliberate. One that requires discipline. Grit. All of these qualities, along with our founder’s vision, have helped grow Barnhill Contracting Company into one of the Southeast’s leading contractors.

Our success is built from the dedicated service of each and every one of our employees. Construction is hard work – long hours and immense pressure to meet critical deadlines – and we are proud to employ the most talented group of people in the industry. When you join the Barnhill team, you become part of the Barnhill Family.

Job Description:

The Business Intelligence Analyst / Specialist is the face of a new BI function that Barnhill Contracting is building from the ground up. This role turns data from Spectrum, Workday, Procore, and other source systems into the reports, dashboards, automated data flows, and curated data sets that move the business forward — and identifies where manual processes can be replaced with data-driven automation that gives people back their time. The ideal candidate pairs technical capability with genuine curiosity about the business, strong customer-service instincts, and the ability to partner across divisions.

This is posted at two levels that share the same mission; the difference is depth, independence, and scope of ownership, with a clear, supported path from Analyst to Specialist. The Analyst is an emerging BI professional — technically capable, eager to learn the business, and ready to own reporting work end-to-end with guidance from the VP of IT and the BI Developer. The Specialist is an experienced practitioner who operates independently across the full lifecycle — requirements, data modeling, development, governance, and stakeholder enablement — and serves as a trusted partner to leadership and a force-multiplier for the BI Developer.

A typical day might include meeting with stakeholders to scope a reporting request, building or refining a dashboard, writing queries against a relational database, validating data accuracy before publishing, or partnering with the BI Developer on a data integration. This position is multi-faceted, with executive sponsorship and a leadership team ready to invest in the work.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

Stakeholder Partnership & Requirements:

  • Analyst — Meet with stakeholders to understand reporting requests; translate them into well-scoped requirements, follow up promptly, and keep people informed.

  • Specialist — Own the stakeholder relationship end-to-end across multiple departments; anticipate needs, drive adoption, and influence software-selection decisions before they are signed.

Development, Reporting & Automation:

  • Analyst — Build dashboards and reports using enterprise BI tools against existing curated data sources; write relational database queries (PostgreSQL) for analysis and ad-hoc requests; contribute to automated data workflows and integrations under the developer's guidance.

  • Specialist — Design purpose-built data sources and lead dashboard development across the company; partner with the BI Developer on warehouse design, ETL, and API integrations; identify and build workflow automation solutions that replace manual, repetitive data processes with governed, data-driven alternatives.

Data Governance & Maintenance:

  • Analyst — Follow data governance standards, document your work, and help maintain role-based security assignments; validate data accuracy before publishing.

  • Specialist — Establish and evolve governance standards; own role-based security templates by department, division, and function; define the "source of truth" for each data domain and keep pipelines healthy.

Self-Serve Enablement:

  • Analyst — Support power users by answering questions and helping them reach the right data source.

  • Specialist — Build and curate the trusted data sources that power self-serve reporting for the building and civil groups; coach power users into greater data fluency.

Minimum Qualifications & Training:

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related field — or an equivalent combination of work and experience (both levels).

  • Years of experience: Analyst — 1–3 years in BI, reporting, data analysis, or business analysis. Specialist — 3+ years building production BI solutions end-to-end.

  • Query language: Analyst — comfortable writing queries against a relational database and willing to learn optimization. Specialist — strong query authoring and tuning (joins, CTEs, window functions, performance tuning).

  • BI & reporting tools: Analyst — hands-on experience with a BI visualization tool (e.g., Power BI, Tableau) in a learning or supporting capacity. Specialist — production experience building, publishing, and maintaining dashboards in one or more enterprise BI tools.

  • Data modeling: Analyst — aware of star/snowflake concepts and ready to learn. Specialist — builds curated fact/dimension data sets independently.

  • Integration: Analyst — familiar with the concept of API and ERP integrations. Specialist — experience pulling data from ERPs and HRIS via direct connection or REST API.

  • Excel: Analyst — power user (pivots and complex formulas). Specialist — power user, plus data connections and Power Query.

  • Communication: Analyst — clear, professional, and customer-service oriented. Specialist — adjusts style for a superintendent, a controller, or an executive; a trusted advisor.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience in construction, engineering, or another project-based industry.

  • Familiarity with Spectrum (Viewpoint), Workday, Procore, or similar ERP/HRIS/project management platforms.

  • Experience with Microsoft Fabric (our analytics platform of record); hands-on knowledge of Snowflake, Databricks, Azure Synapse, or other modern cloud data platforms transfers directly and is equally valued.

  • Understanding of construction concepts — job cost, GMP, subcontractor billing, equipment management, and payroll across multiple unions and wage templates.

  • Experience standing up role-based security and data access patterns.

  • Background in data flow automation or business workflow automation — replacing manual, spreadsheet-driven processes with automated, data-driven solutions.

  • Familiarity with AI-assisted analytics tooling (e.g., Copilot, natural language query tools) and a realistic view of where it adds value today.

Behavioral Requirements:

Daily commitment to Barnhill's values:

  • Commitment – individual ownership to achieve team success

  • Family – sense of belonging

  • Integrity – uncompromising character that earns trust and respect

  • Learning and development – investing in employees to enable their long-term success.

  • Diversity – open and adaptable to a changing world.

Working Conditions:

  • On-site in Rocky Mount, NC; office environment with occasional travel to other company locations.

  • May require working outside regular business hours to address critical issues or project deadlines.

  • Choice of Health Insurance options (BCBSNC)
