The DSE Platform Independent Common (PI-Common) group develops high-performance, platform-independent system software that runs across Cisco’s flagship routers and switches. We design and deliver core routing protocols and infrastructure components that power Cisco’s Mass Scale Infrastructure, Cloud Networking, and Network Experience portfolios.
Our team owns the architecture, implementation, and lifecycle of BGP, a key control plane protocol that enable critical solutions for the Data Center and provide them a competitive edge.
This Data Center group is in the forefront of developing products that power the largest networks in the world. The networking industry is going through a massive transformation to build the next generation infrastructure to meet the needs of AI/ML workloads and continuously increasing internet users and application. We are uniquely positioned to capture that market transition.
Your Impact Develops software consistent with Cisco ‘Build Thinking Principles’ with a focus on simplification and UX (User Experience) at its core, using secure coding practices, ensuring user privacy, and following software development best practices. Partners with other teams including develop and product management to develop the right solution for the customers. Builds technicadevelopgn documentation to be used by the team as well as contributing to user documentation to be used by end users. Debugs and addresses software issues during development and in production systems to support customers. Brings new ideas for product innovation and helps improve software development processes.
What You’ll Do
- Advanced experienced professional using best practices and knowledge of internal or external business issues to improve products or services.
- Works independently but receives minimal guidance and direction from leader then determines best approach to accomplish work.
- Acts as a resource for colleagues with less experience.
- Understands project and/or department needs and establishes relationships with appropriate cross-functional stakeholders to gather input, collect information and complete work steps.
- May lead projects from end-to-end through delegation, review, and driving results holistically.
- May lead medium features from technical design through completion.
- May contribute to a defined software engineering roadmap.
- Identifies and recommends improvements to the software development lifecycle and best practices in agile engineering.
- Leads delivery of high-quality design of features and deliverables.
- Identifies opportunities for multiple products to work together to create value for customers.
- Integrates product sense as it relates to design of the product (market awareness, production adoption, competition) and tracks related metrics.
- Writes functional clean code and unit tests with no guidance.
- Maintains and enhances solutions by fixing complicated errors, raising risks, and escalating issues where necessary.
- Identifies immediate and larger scope problems through thorough code reviews.
- Tests and reviews code to optimize scale, velocity, and reliability of deliverables.
- Contributes to threat modeling of a feature.
- Monitors the production environment and works cross-functionally to identify problems and track production systems.
- May serve as escalation point for on-call issues.
- Leads postmortem and writes root cause analysis.
- Expert on multiple functional components.
- Shares knowledge across teams, both informally and formally (e.g., ad-hoc basis, internal presentations, blogs, newsletters).
- Coordinates across teams to estimate times and complete projects according to specification and user requirements.
- Tracks milestones, progress and provides ongoing updates and remediation plans to cross-functional partners.
- Mentors peers or more junior team members.
- Assists other engineers through code reviews, documentation, and technical guidance.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelors + 4 years of related experience OR Masters + 2 years of related experience OR PhD + 1 year of related experience.
- Requires solid conceptual and practical knowledge in primary technical job family and knowledge of related technical job families; has worked with a range of technologies.
Preferred Qualifications
- Hands-on experience in routing protocols and/or routing infrastructure.
- Experience in manageability frameworks such as YANG/SNMP/XML.
- Good understanding of concepts in operating system, Inter process communication, high availability etc
- Experience in any Cisco OS – XR, XE or NXOS would be a plus
- Creative problem-solving skills and excellent troubleshooting/debugging skills
- Excellent teamwork and people skills
