Job description

The Singapore Centre for 3D Printing (SC3DP) offers a full range of additive manufacturing services, from design and infrastructure to production and validation. With advanced technologies such as topology optimization, generative design, and bioinspired design, SC3DP creates optimized products using a variety of novel materials and printing processes, including hybrid printing, post-processing, and emerging technologies. Sustainability is a top priority for SC3DP, which offers material development and control services that combine artificial intelligence, big data, and other digital tools for process optimization, as well as non-destructive testing for AM parts. Backed by a team of experts and a state-of-the-art facility equipped with the latest equipment and technologies, SC3DP is committed to leading the way in sustainable additive manufacturing research and development.

We are looking for a highly motivated Research Fellow to join our multidisciplinary team in advancing robotics-enabled additive manufacturing of wood-polymer composites (WPCs). The successful candidate will explore and optimise biodegradable WPCs and wood waste powder size and aspect ratio for use in extrusion and powder-bed fusion of polymers (PBF-LB/P) 3D printing. The role involves robot arm programming, path planning, and printing parameter optimisation to fabricate large-scale, complex, high-performance structures for industries such as furniture and manufacturing. This role is central to our efforts to push the boundaries of AM material innovation and supports NTU’s commitment to sustainable and impactful technological development.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, synthesise, and characterise composite materials suitable for various AM platforms (e.g., extrusion, DLP, SLA, DIW).

  • Optimise printing parameters for AM and integrate with robotic systems (e.g., robot arm programming, path planning, etc.).

  • Evaluate  rheological, thermal and mechanical properties and structural performance of developed composites.

  • Perform finite element simulation to predict material behaviour and structural performance.

  • Conduct 3D printing experiments to assess printability, structural fidelity, and functional performance.

  • Collaborate closely with cross-disciplinary researchers in materials science and mechanical engineering.

  • Prepare scientific manuscripts, presentations, and technical reports.

  • Supervise junior members of the team and contribute to proposal writing where needed.

Required educational qualification, experience, skills and competencies:

  • PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.

  • At least 1 year of relevant experiences in technical hands-on experience in AM. Candidates with expertise in robotic systems, AM, material formulation, process optimisation, or composite development are preferred.

  • Familiarity with mechanical testing, microstructural characterisation, and surface topography characterization (e.g., force characterisation, SEM, profilometry).

  • Numerical modeling capability (e.g. finite element simulation) is preferred.

  • Good written and oral communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently while contributing to collaborative, interdisciplinary research.

  • Strong communication skills and a proven track record of scientific publications.

We regret to inform that only shortlisted candidates will be notified.
