About Lihir

Our Lihir Operation, located on the beautiful island of Niolam, approximately 800km north of Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby, is one of the world’s largest gold mines. Set within a geothermically active, extinct volcanic crater, Lihir operates an open-pit mine producing refractory ore, which undergoes pressure oxidation and conventional leaching to recover gold. Our workforce includes both residential and commute rosters, creating a diverse and dynamic team. Lihir offers a range of recreational facilities, including a gym, sports club, restaurant, bar, swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, and a 9-hole golf course. Your Impact

Step into a role where your financial expertise directly shapes business performance. As a Specialist, Finance, you will partner closely with site leadership based in Papua New Guinea to deliver critical insights, drive cost control, and support multimillion-dollar capital investment decisions.

You will play a key role in coordinating budgeting and forecasting and SOX compliance, delivering accurate month-end reporting, and identifying opportunities to improve financial processes and reporting standards. Your work will enable better decision-making across operations, ensuring financial discipline and long-term value creation.

As part of our team, you will

  • Partner with operational leaders to prepare annual budgets and rolling forecasts, aligning inputs across multiple departments
  • Deliver accurate month-end financial reporting and analyse cost and capital expenditure variances
  • Provide actionable financial insights and recommendations to drive site performance and business outcomes
  • Support and manage capital expenditure pipelines, contributing to effective financial planning
  • Identify and implement process improvements to strengthen financial reporting and analysis practices
  • Build dashboards, analytical models, and forecasting tools using SAP, Power BI and advanced Excel
  • Collaborate with department managers, superintendents, and stakeholders to embed strong cost control practices
  • Present financial performance insights to senior stakeholders to influence decision-making

Prerequisites for your success in this role

To thrive in this position, you will bring a combination of technical capability, strong stakeholder engagement, and the ability to operate independently:

Qualifications & Experience

  • Degree in Accounting or Finance, with CA/CPA (or working towards)
  • Demonstrated experience in financial planning & analysis, ideally within mining or heavy industry environments
  • Exposure to capital expenditure analysis and cost management

Technical Expertise

  • Strong experience with SAP (S/4HANA preferred) and financial systems
  • Advanced Excel skills, with experience in building financial models
  • Power BI capability, including training users and troubleshooting

Capabilities & Attributes

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to draw insights from complex data
  • Confident communicator, able to engage stakeholders in both on-site and virtual environments
  • Self-driven with the ability to work independently and manage competing priorities
  • Collaborative mindset with the ability to influence and build relationships across teams

Working conditions

12-month fixed-term opportunity, with potential for extension or permanency

Our Brisbane-based team enjoys flexible Monday to Friday work arrangements, balancing time between the office and working from home. Our modern Fortitude Valley office is conveniently located near public transport and local cafés. Occasional travel to site operations and other interstate Newmont hubs may be required to support the broader team.
