Job description
Cooley is seeking a Paralegal to join the Business Litigation team.
Position Summary: Primarily responsible for providing Paralegal support during all phases of the litigation process, from the commencement of a new action to disclosure and through trial and post-trial findings and appeals. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Position Responsibilities:
Case Management & Pleadings Stage:
- Organise and maintain case files, i.e. pleadings, correspondence, etc.
- Maintain document/information databases and shared drives
- Co-ordinate projects with the internal litigation support team
- Assist in the creation and implementation of case protocols
- Assist in the drafting and preparation of pleadings
- Administrative tasks associated with the preparation of legal submissions and exhibit bundles
- Proofread, cite-check, and edit documents
- All other duties as assigned or required
Disclosure:
- Assist with all aspects of document productions
- Review and identify documents for responsiveness, privilege, subject matter, etc.
- Digest / summarise disclosure requests, witness statements, etc.
- Assist in preparing witness statements and expert reports together with their respective exhibits
- All other duties as assigned or required
Research:
- Conduct factual research and organise information retrieved in a coherent and concise manner
- Research basic legal concepts and issues, including rules of civil procedure and local court rules
- All other duties as assigned or required
Trial:
- Assist with coordinating trial logistics, including technical and demonstrative needs
- Assemble and maintain trial exhibits, notebooks, witness files etc.
- Track admitted evidence
- Conduct research during trial on an as needed basis
- Organise files post trial
- All other duties as assigned or required
This job description is not exhaustive and the job holder may be required to undertake additional duties from time to time to ensure the smooth running all of the different practice areas / groups within the Litigation Department.
Skills & Experience:
Required:
- University degree or equivalent
- Relevant litigation/dispute resolution experience
- Working knowledge of MS Office packages ability to navigate various electronic databases including Relativity
Preferred:
- Strong research skills and proficiency in using various research tools, including Westlaw UK, Lexis Library and an understanding of CPR rules
- Ability to work overtime and the flexibility to adjust hours to meet operating needs
- Legal billing experience and knowledge of Intapp Time (DTE) desirable
- Understanding of rules governing data privacy
