Job description
Kōrero mō te tūranga | About the role
This is a 6-month fixed term opportunity, covering a secondment, where you’ll step into the heart of the Market Strategy & Portfolio team as an Energy Analyst.
Ideally based in Wellington, and reporting to the Market Strategy & Portfolio Manager (who’s been here yonks and is a good sort), you’ll work across short to mid-term portfolio strategy, real-time trading support, and fuel management activities – helping ensure decisions are informed, timely, and commercially sound.
Your work will span analysis, interpretation, and action. You’ll:
- Develop and maintain short-term electricity and gas strategies, constantly scanning the market for risks and opportunities
- Provide real-time guidance and decision support to trading teams, especially during dynamic or high-pressure events
- Contribute to mid-term portfolio optimisation – from reservoir management through to broader portfolio decisions
- Execute operational activities including gas nominations and short-term trading actions
- Work closely with internal stakeholders to ensure strategy reflects both short-term realities and longer-term trade-offs
- Reflect on performance and continuously improve systems, processes, and outcomes
This is a role where you’ll use data to tell a clear, compelling story – turning complexity into insight, and insight into action.
Note that there is an on-call component in this job which requires you to be on-call one week in every 4 weeks.
Ko wai koe | About you
You don’t need to tick every box – but you bring curiosity, sound judgement, and a natural ability to make sense of complexity.
What you’ll bring (must-haves):
- A tertiary qualification in Finance, Economics, Engineering, Maths or a related field
- Experience analysing data and turning it into clear, actionable insights
- Confidence working with complex information and communicating it simply to a range of audiences
- The ability to make decisions or recommendations, even when not everything is known
- A collaborative mindset – you build trust, contribute openly, and support those around you
Nice to have:
- Experience in the energy sector or adjacent markets
- Familiarity with energy markets, trading environments, or portfolio optimisation
- Exposure to tools such as Python, R, Excel, or energy modelling platforms
- Experience working with digital tools or improving systems and processes
The way you show up matters just as much:
- You stay curious – leaning into complex problems rather than away from them
- You’re confident making calls, while staying open to challenge
- You bring others with you – sharing thinking, listening well, and valuing different perspectives
The Wholesale Market team are mostly based in Wellington and it would be great if you are too, however this 6-month fixed term contract can be based elsewhere and we’re open to applications from all over Aotearoa.
There are a bunch of perks to working at Contact. Along with great leadership and teammates, you’ll enjoy flexible working, a ‘Good to be Home’ payment toward your home set up & wellbeing, and more.
Applications close on Friday 3 July, but just like peak demand, great talent surges early – so if this role sparks your interest, power up your application now!
