Job description

The Tla’amin Nation is a modern, forward thinking, self-governing nation located on the beautiful upper Sunshine Coast (qathet Region).

Position Summary

Job Type: Part-Time, Permanent

Hours of Work: 40 hours a week for 8 weeks of Summer (July-August), 18 hours per week for

non-Summer 10 months (September-June).

Reporting to: Recreation Manager

Department: Community Services

Recreation Workers assist in leading a diverse range of programs and activities, ensuring the safety and well-being of čičuy (children). The role aims to enrich our entire community’s quality of life through indoor and outdoor arts, fitness, and community events.

Key Responsibilities

Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with Tla’amin laws, regulations, policies, practices and procedures as directed by the Recreation Manager. Maintains confidentiality as required pertaining to Citizens, clients, employees and general matters of the Nation.

Responsibilities Include

  • Assists in organizing and planning daily and monthly activities.
  • Leads a variety of games, crafts, sports and other activities while engaging with the čičuy (children) to provide a fun and safe experience.
  • Ensures the safety of čičuy (children) and other participants at all times.
  • Assists with evaluating program content and participant satisfaction.
  • Cleans, sets up and takes down equipment before, during and after programs.
  • Organizes equipment storage.
  • Monitors and maintains the quality, appearance, and safety of all equipment.
  • Assists the Recreation Coordinator in related program duties and promotion of programs
  • Builds relationships with all ages, but most importantly with the čičuy (children) and parents/guardians to ensure information is shared clearly.
  • Checks work related emails daily and responds accordingly.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Training, Education, Experience

  • Completion of Grade 12.
  • Interest in pursuing post-secondary education in the field of recreation is an asset.
  • Experience working with and leading a wide range of programs for children and youth is an asset.
  • Experience ensuring a safe environment for program participants and overseeing sign-in and sign-out procedures.
  • Experience leading activities based on activity objectives and adjusting activities based on age, skill, and physical abilities.
  • Experience encouraging skill development and progression through skill levels.
  • Acceptable Driving Record and valid B.C. Class 5 Driver’s License.
  • C. Class 4 Driver’s License or willingness to obtain preferred.
  • A valid First Aid Certificate and CPR – Level C or willingness to obtain.
  • Food Safe Level 1.
  • Responsible Adult Certification (19 years of age+ a requirement of certification).
  • An acceptable Police Information Check, including Vulnerable Sector Check, prior to employment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships with all ages.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to build and maintain professional working relationships.
  • Ability to keep accurate records and produce written reports as required.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, enthusiasm, and positive attitude when relating to all ages and the public.
  • Good organizational and planning skills.
  • Passionate about both indoor and outdoor recreation activities.
  • Basic computer skills including MS Word and Outlook.
  • Physical ability to regularly lift up to 30lbs and move program-related equipment.
  • Knowledge of recreational and social interests of čičuy (children) and various recreational activities including games, sports, art and seasonal activities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team setting and support teammates as needed.
  • Ability to provide exceptional customer service.

Working Conditions

Work is performed indoors and outdoors at ʔayɩštən ʔaye (Cousin's House) or dependent on programming, at other locations in qathet. Shifts may range from 2 to 8 hours. Some office and computer work is required.
