What are we looking for?

The Physical Therapist , under the guidance of the PT Supervisor and the Clinical Director, delivers comprehensive therapeutic services to eligible autistic students with complex emotional-behavioral needs to enhance their access to the academic environment and maximize participation in activities within the day and residential school setting.

The physical therapist is responsible for evaluating students and developing appropriate therapy programs that consider classroom routines and needed accommodations or adaptations. They employ a variety of strategies to address musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, or other physical impairments impacting students’ physical function and participation, such as exercises and manual therapy to assist body structures and functions, adapting physical tasks, adapting the classroom environment, recommending assistive devices, or training staff to carryover therapeutic strategies.

Duties and Responsibilities

Work with assigned students on as determined by student census and current PT session needs

Assess students using appropriate evaluation tools, including standardized or informal tests, clinical observations, and review of medical/educational records

Develop and implement individualized therapy programs for qualifying students

Document screenings, evaluations, treatment plans, quarterly progress reports, discharge summaries, and other required data

Provide consultation and in-service training to staff to support carryover of therapeutic strategies in day and residential settings

Collaborate with caregivers to ensure alignment of therapy plans across home and school environments

Recommend and support the acquisition and use of adaptive equipment and assistive technology

Maintain accurate clinical and administrative records in accordance with program and regulatory requirements

Perform other related duties as required

Qualifications and Minimum Experience

Doctorate in Physical Therapy (DPT) from an accredited Physical Therapy program

Minimum of 1 year of pediatric experience working with students on the autism spectrum or with developmental disabilities

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of physical therapy principles and application in educational settings

Experience with a variety of evaluation tools and therapeutic/adaptive equipment

Ability to assess, develop, and implement individualized treatment plans

Strong documentation and organizational skills

Effective verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills

Ability to train others in therapeutic carryover techniques

Ability to prioritize, stay organized, and meet deadlines

Physical Demands

Workday regularly includes multiple or conflicting demands and deadlines; it requires sustained concentration

Frequent walking up and down stairs (6-floor building) or between buildings

Support students using therapeutic equipment such as treadmills, swings, scooters, and other adaptive devices
