POSITION SUMMARY

Biomedical Equipment Technicians (BMETs) are responsible for installing, inspecting, repairing, and maintaining medical equipment and clinical support systems used in healthcare interventions. This work is performed under moderate supervision, with guidance provided to help you develop your skills and independence. As a BMET, you may be responsible for calibrating, modifying, and adapting various medical equipment. Equipment may range from complex systems, such as X-ray machines and defibrillators, to essential items, such as adjustable hospital beds. As a BMET, you'll often perform your duties around patients because medical devices provide continuous healthcare. Using our asset management platform, we keep accurate records of repairs and maintenance activities. Work schedules may include evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays; they may also involve after-hours callbacks.

NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Technician I

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent

Technician II

  • An associate degree in electronics or biomedical equipment technology or an equivalent combination of education or three (3) years of work-related experience in repairing and maintaining medical equipment.

Experience

Technician I

  • Must have at least three (3) months of electronics field experience; engineering methods, applications, and techniques are used to analyze, troubleshoot, modify, repair, install, and evaluate electronics systems

Technician II

  • A minimum of three (3) years of work-related experience in repairing and maintaining medical equipment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Technician I

  • Assist BMET II, the Manager, and the Project Coordinator in repairing, installing, maintaining, calibrating, and inspecting medical equipment and instrumentation, including life-support equipment.
  • Assist the BMET II with preventive maintenance and electrical safety testing of all medical equipment and clinical support systems, including life-support equipment.
  • Will assist in learning the fundamentals and responsibilities of maintaining and entering all new equipment data on our asset management platform, including equipment data, document uploads, logging of all parts, and repair costs for work orders, including service agreements.
  • Will assist in learning the fundamentals and responsibilities of maintaining the inventory of biomedical equipment supplies by verifying stock, anticipating needs, placing and expediting orders, and verifying receiving documents for the finance department.
  • Assist BMET II, the Manager, and the Project Coordinator by providing technical assistance, education, and instruction to personnel on equipment operation, cleaning, and maintenance.
  • Will assist BMET II and the Manager in understanding the fundamentals of reviewing the outcomes of preventive maintenance actions, such as EST and calibration reports, and in recommending improvements to the department.
  • Will assist BMET II and the Manager in resolving problems across the manufacturing, quality, procurement, and accounts payable departments by contacting the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to resolve equipment operation issues and by arranging equipment repairs, parts, warranty, and service agreement replacements.
  • Continuous education is essential to staying abreast of advancements in medical equipment at both the national and international levels. This can be done by reviewing technical publications, participating in webinars hosted by original equipment manufacturers, and building a professional network with all vendors.
