Job description

Job Requirements

The Clinical Nurse I (CN I) provides safe, evidence-based, patient-centered nursing care to adult medical-surgical patients on the 7 West (7W) Medical-Surgical Unit. Working collaboratively within the interdisciplinary team, the CN I is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating individualized patient care while promoting quality outcomes, patient safety, and the principles of High Reliability Organization (HRO) practice.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Deliver comprehensive nursing care utilizing the nursing process.
  • Perform accurate patient assessments and develop individualized plans of care.
  • Administer medications, treatments, and procedures in accordance with hospital policies and evidence-based practice.
  • Monitor patient status, recognize changes in condition, and communicate concerns promptly to the healthcare team.
  • Provide patient and family education to promote recovery, discharge readiness and self-management.
  • Maintain timely, accurate, and complete documentation within the electronic medical record (EPIC).
  • Collaborate with physicians, advanced practice providers, case management, therapy services, pharmacy, and ancillary departments to coordinate patient care.
  • Participate in bedside shift report, prepare dayshift for interdisciplinary bedside rounds (IBR) and unit safety huddles.
  • Adhere to infection prevention, fall prevention, pressure injury prevention, medication safety, and patient identification standards.
  • Support quality improvement initiatives and maintain compliance with Joint Commission, CMS, and UMMS standards.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, accountability, teamwork, and excellent customer service while fostering a respectful and inclusive work environment.
  • Successfully complete orientation and maintain clinical competency requirements

Work Experience

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Current Maryland Registered Nurse (RN) license or eligibility for Maryland licensure.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association required.
  • Ability to work full-time day shift (72 hours per pay period), including weekends and holidays per departmental scheduling requirements.
  • Strong communication, critical thinking, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to delivering compassionate, patient-centered care aligned with the mission and values of UM BWMC.
