Job description

A. General Description

The Director of Digital Products and User Experience Design is responsible for developing an exemplary digital customer experience across the association’s mobile, community, collaboration, enterprise search, and select ASHA digital products. The Director drives the product vision/roadmap for assigned digital products and leads a team to optimize digital experiences for ASHA members and potential members. The Director is skilled at combining strategic thinking, analytical approach, and knowledge of user behavior to lead the digital product and user experience design. The incumbent is a champion the user’s perspective and will employ and model a member-centric approach in the development of new features and functions of digital collaboration and mobile products as well as other products.

The Director assists the Chief Digital Communications Officer in translating strategic direction into actionable roadmaps for the Digital Communications team. The incumbent is also responsible for communicating product vision and roadmap within cross-functional project teams and on behalf of the team to stakeholders, executives, and vendors.

The successful candidate leverages user and market research, industry best practices, and product management methodologies to drive multi-year product roadmaps. He/she is exceptionally imaginative, collaborative, and enthusiastic about translating member needs into the creation of high-quality digital, collaboration, and mobile experiences. The Director demonstrates success by using both quantitative and qualitative measurement methods.

B. Responsibilities

  • Leads product life cycle for select ASHA’s digital products including mobile, collaboration, enterprise search. Manages the delivery of design projects including scope, goals, and milestones in collaboration with key stakeholders across the organization.
  • Sets the product vision and develop a short and long-term roadmap to execute. Leverages user and market research, industry best practices and product management methodologies to continuously improve each product.
  • Leads ASHA’s enterprise search, online community, board portal, awards software, live online events, and. Work collaboratively with subject matter experts and units to enhance and solve product and process issues as appropriate.
  • Leads, manages, and mentors a team that includes UX designers and a digital product manager.
  • Drives product enhancement efforts with individual business units, IS, and vendors. Manage SOW’s for digital products and projects as appropriate.
  • Promotes and communicates ASHA’s digital collaboration and mobile products to external and internal audiences. Facilitate digital collaboration, knowledge sharing, and networking for ASHA members, and volunteer leader using ASHA’s community platform (community.asha.org).

To accomplish responsibilities listed above, the incumbent has contact with:

ASHA Staff to

  • Works collaboratively with IS developers, business system analysts, project managers and stakeholders to continuously improve products and programs
  • Leads cross-discipline ASHA teams. Communicate product vision and roadmaps within cross-functional project teams and on behalf of the team to stakeholders and executives.

Vendors to

  • Manages vendor relationships and identifies how vendor roadmaps and new features can enhance and optimize ASHA’s digital collaboration and mobile products
  • Members, affiliates, and volunteer leaders to:
  • Promotes and communicates ASHA’s digital collaboration and mobile products
  • Facilitates digital collaboration, knowledge sharing, and networking for ASHA members, and volunteer leaders using ASHA’s community platform (community.asha.org)

D. Freedom to Act

Incumbent will receive both specific and broad goals from their coach. Specific goals may also originate from other staff leadership. In the implementation of those goals, considerable latitude will be given.

E. Qualifications – Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills:

Knowledge and skills typically acquired through

  • B.A. / B.S. or relevant professional experience, MBA or CAE preferred.
  • Relevant hands-on professional experience managing digital products and teams.
  • Continuing education or coursework in product management and association business.

Scope and depth of technical skills/knowledge

  • Demonstrates expertise in digital product development, maintenance, and lifecycle management
  • Demonstrable knowledge of the latest developments in Agile Development, Design Thinking, and API Integration
  • Demonstrates expertise with HTML and web development principles
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications, user experience and community platforms

Scope and depth of nontechnical skills/knowledge

  • 3-4 years of digital product management experience (4-5 years of association specific experience preferred)
  • 2-3 years of experience supervising and managing others
  • Demonstrates ability to leverage user and market research, industry best practices, and product management methodologies to drive multi-year product roadmaps
  • Resourceful, analytical, and self-motivated
  • Demonstrates ability to assume a leadership role in facilitating digital product strategy
  • Demonstrates ability to assume a leadership role in managing an internal UX design team
  • Demonstrates ability to manage and maintain strong and productive vendor partnerships
  • Demonstrates ability to manage cross-functional project teams to meet digital roadmap milestones and issues
  • Demonstrates ability to work independently and anticipate next steps
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Detail-oriented, ability to multi-task, ability to work under pressure
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
