Assoc. Director, Engineering (Banking Tech)
Job description
Associate Director, Engineering (Banking Technology)
Location: Cambodia
Job Type: Full-time
Job Sector: IT & Communication, Tech, Engineering
Salary Range: USD $5,000 – $6,000/month
Role Overview
You will lead the design, evolution, and scalability of a high-impact Internal Developer Platform for a leading digital banking organization. You will focus on automation, AI integration, and engineering best practices to optimize software delivery across teams. This is an opportunity to drive the adoption of advanced DevOps and reliability engineering practices in a dynamic, rapidly growing environment.
Who is This Role For
This role is ideal for a seasoned DevOps, SRE, or Platform Engineering leader with proven experience in building scalable platforms and leading high-performing teams. The ideal candidate thrives in high-scale environments, embraces automation, and is passionate about developer experience and digital innovation. Strong technical depth and stakeholder collaboration are essential to succeed.
Key Responsibilities
- Build and continually improve an Internal Developer Platform as a product, including creating self-service infrastructure, standardized CI/CD pipelines, and established 'golden paths' for engineering teams.
- Drive end-to-end automation of the software development lifecycle with the goal of achieving near-zero manual intervention and eliminating operational toil.
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of DevOps and SRE engineers, fostering an automation-first, engineering-driven culture emphasizing ownership and accountability.
- Enable the adoption of best practices across engineering teams through training, platform enablement, and advocacy rather than centralized control.
- Integrate AI tools, such as Cursor, Claude Code, and Copilot, into engineering workflows to accelerate code generation, automate incident analysis and root cause identification, and optimize CI/CD pipelines and testing processes.
- Identify and implement ongoing opportunities to improve software development lifecycle (SDLC) efficiency, reduce lead times, lower change failure rates, and minimize operational overhead.
- Design, build, and maintain highly scalable, reliable CI/CD systems that provide fast feedback loops.
- Implement and enforce automated quality gates, including unit, integration, and end-to-end testing, security testing (SAST/DAST), and dependency or container scanning.
- Establish Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and Configuration as Code (CaC) as standard practices across teams.
- Ensure environmental consistency, reproducibility, and auditability throughout all phases of development and deployment.
- Own and evolve the platform's observability stack—covering metrics, logs, and traces—and lead the adoption of SLO/SLI-based reliability practices.
- Implement proactive monitoring, alerting, and, where applicable, automated remediation to enable self-healing systems.
- Drive adoption of reliability engineering practices, including incident management, blameless postmortems, and use of error budgets.
- Troubleshoot complex distributed system issues and resolve performance bottlenecks.
- Embed security by design into the platform by implementing RBAC, secrets management, network policies, and automated compliance controls.
- Optimize infrastructure and cloud costs while promoting the efficient use of resources.
- Collaborate closely with engineering, QA, and product teams to continuously improve developer experience.
- Train and support teams in effectively leveraging platform capabilities and AI-assisted development tools.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Have at least 5 years of experience in DevOps, SRE, or Platform Engineering, including leadership responsibilities.
- Demonstrate strong, hands-on experience in building and operating scalable platforms and distributed systems.
- Show a proven track record in developing Internal Developer Platforms or similar self-service engineering ecosystems.
- Offer deep expertise in CI/CD, automation, and infrastructure at scale.
- Have practical experience integrating AI tools, such as Cursor, Claude Code, or Copilot, into engineering workflows.
- Demonstrate the ability to improve SDLC metrics such as lead time, deployment frequency, and mean time to recovery (MTTR).
- Exhibit strong expertise with Kubernetes and container ecosystems.
- Possess solid experience with major cloud platforms, including AWS, GCP, or Azure.
- Be proficient in Infrastructure as Code (e.g. Terraform) and configuration management tools (e.g. Ansible).
- Have strong scripting or programming skills, using languages such as Python, Go, or similar.
- Demonstrate experience with observability tooling such as Prometheus, Grafana, or OpenTelemetry.
- Show a good understanding of reliability engineering principles, including SLOs, SLIs, and error budgets.
- Demonstrate experience with DevSecOps practices and modern security approaches.
- Have familiarity with both SQL and NoSQL databases.
- Exhibit strong systems thinking skills and the ability to simplify complex technical environments.
- Possess excellent communication skills and the ability to influence engineering culture and practices.
- Have experience working in fast-paced, high-scale environments.
- Cost optimisation experience would be advantageous.
