Paragon Recruitment Ltd
Asset Engineer
Job description
Own the network. Influence the decisions that shape it.
Wellington Electricity powers over 170,000 homes and businesses across the capital and is recognised as one of New Zealand’s most reliable electricity distribution companies.
Behind that performance is a team of engineers who don’t just deliver work, they own asset performance, manage lifecycle risk, and make the calls that shape how the network evolves.
We’re hiring multiple Asset Engineers, each aligned to a core area of the network. While all roles sit within the same team and operate across the full asset lifecycle, each has a defined technical focus across distribution and sub-transmission assets including zone substations, transformers, switchgear, cables, protection systems, and overhead network infrastructure.
Where You Could Fit
CAPEX & Investment
You focus on what gets built, when, and why.
Shape CAPEX programmes across network and substation asset fleets
Build investment cases using asset condition, risk modelling, and whole-of-life cost analysis
Support long-term asset strategies, load growth and capacity planning
Influence scope, standards, and delivery approach for major capital works
Engineering Assurance & Standards
You act as a technical authority.
Provide independent assurance across primary plant, protection schemes, and network designs
Own and evolve engineering standards, specifications, and technical governance frameworks
Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, industry standards, and safety obligations
Review designs, settings, and documentation prior to construction and commissioning
Reliability & Performance
You focus on how the network actually performs.
Analyse fault data, asset health, and network performance trends across asset classes
Improve SAIDI/SAIFI and quality of supply outcomes through targeted interventions
Lead root cause analysis, failure investigations, and defect elimination
Identify systemic risk, emerging failure modes, and reliability improvement opportunities
Operations & Delivery Support
You work closest to the field and control room.
Provide engineering input into fault response, switching, outages, and live network operations
Support delivery teams through works integration, commissioning, and asset acceptance
Ensure assets are tested, compliant, and fit-for-service prior to energisation
Enable safe, coordinated delivery across capital and maintenance programmes
What Sits Across All Roles
No matter your focus, this is not a passive role. You are there to:
Apply engineering judgement to decisions involving asset risk, reliability, and lifecycle performance
Act as a bridge between planning, delivery, operations, and asset management
Support maintenance, renewal, and replacement strategies across the network
Ensure assets are safe, compliant, and performing as intended across their lifecycle
Take ownership of outcomes — not just contribute to them
What You’ll Bring
Experience in electricity distribution or comparable high-voltage infrastructure environments
Strong understanding of network engineering, asset management principles, and risk-based decision making
Exposure to protection systems, asset performance analysis, or technical assurance frameworks
Experience working with asset data, condition monitoring, or maintenance strategies
Confidence to challenge, influence, and make engineering calls
Ability to collaborate across engineering, planning, and operational teams
Why Wellington Electricity
This is a high-trust, high-visibility environment.
You’re not buried in a large organisation — your work is visible, your input is valued, and your decisions matter. You’ll be part of a team that genuinely owns the network, not just supports it.
Backed by a culture of we Work Together, we Own It, we Speak Up, you’ll be supported to bring your thinking forward and have an impact.
