We’re looking for a highly skilled Mechanical Technologist / Technician (Optomechanical AIT to join our dynamic team, where innovation meets impact. In this role, you’ll play a key part in the assembly, integration, and testing of advanced optomechanical systems and spaceborne instruments. Working closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams, you’ll support the successful delivery of high-performance payloads by ensuring all mechanical assemblies meet the highest standards of quality, reliability, and precision. Your hands-on expertise and attention to detail will contribute directly to the success of complex aerospace and space technology projects.

Report To: Optomechanical AIT Lead
Location : Sommerset West, Western Cape
Job Purpose
Support the precise assembly, integration, and testing of spacecraft components, ensuring they meet all technical and quality standards for successful space missions.
Responsibilities
Collaboration and Communication
- Work closely with engineers, technicians, and other stakeholders
- Provide technical support and guidance to team members
- Communicate effectively to resolve issues and ensure project success
Assembly and Integration
- Assemble and integrate optical and mechanical components to ensure proper alignment and functionality
- Maintain the integrity of optical systems in a cleanroom environment
- Develop and refine assembly and integration procedures.
Testing and Validation
- Execute test plans for optomechanical systems.
- Generate test reports for optomechanical systems.
Quality Assurance
- Implement quality control procedures to ensure compliance with industry standards.
- Participate in the NCR Process.
- Assist with root cause analysis.
- Conduct inspections and audits of Optomechanical Systems.
Documentation and Reporting
- Maintain detailed records of assembly, integration, and testing activities.
- Prepare technical documentation, including design documentation, work instructions, build history documentation, test reports, and customer documentation.
- Ensure all documentation is up-to-date and accessible.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree or Advanced Diploma in Mechanical /Mechatronics Engineering, Physics Optomechanical Engineering or related field.
Required Experience
- 1 – 5 years of experience in mechanical engineering roles.
- Experience in mechanical design, development and manufacturing
- Experience and knowledge of optical/optomechanical systems.
- Hands-on integration and assembly experience.
Recommendations
- Experience with Siemens Teamcenter and NX software
- Experience working in a cleanroom environment
- Complying with quality processes (ISO 9001)
- Experience performing AIT of optical payloads or other high-precision optical instrumentation
- Hands-on experience with advanced alignment techniques and equipment.
Special requirement(s)
- Will be required to work on weekends and after hours.
