Job description

Our client is seeking an experienced Director of Payroll to lead enterprise payroll operations, drive process optimization, and support ongoing system enhancements following a recent transition to a modern cloud‑based payroll platform. This role sits within a centralized business services environment and offers high visibility across Finance, HR, and operational leadership.

The position is hybrid , with on‑site presence required Monday–Wednesday each week.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to payroll policy development, governance, and enterprise standardization.
  • Monitor payroll performance metrics, identify gaps, and implement scalable solutions.
  • Serve as a key liaison between internal stakeholders and external payroll service providers.
  • Collaborate on enterprise initiatives such as provider pay improvements and system enhancements.
  • Oversee daily payroll activities including SLA adherence, issue resolution, and ticket/workflow management.
  • Drive continuous improvement of payroll processes following a recent cloud payroll system implementation.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll regulations, internal controls, and audit requirements.
  • Provide leadership to payroll managers and staff, including coaching, performance management, and team development.
  • Partner with Finance, HR/People Services, and technology teams to support payroll initiatives, integrations, and process alignment.
  • Lead transformation efforts such as transitioning select payroll processes from outsourced/managed service models to in‑house operations.
  • Lead enterprise-wide payroll operations, ensuring accurate and timely processing across multiple payroll cycles in a complex, multi‑state environment.

Qualifications (Must-Haves)

  • Bachelor's degree in business, accounting, finance, or related field.
  • 5+ years of leadership experience, including managing managers or sizable teams.
  • Deep knowledge of payroll regulations, compliance, and multi‑state payroll practices.
  • 9+ years of progressive payroll experience within a large, complex, multi‑state organization.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to present complex information to senior leadership.
  • Experience supporting or leading payroll system implementations, integrations, or transformations.
  • Proven ability to work cross‑functionally and influence stakeholders across Finance, HR, and Operations.
  • Strong operational leadership skills with the ability to balance day‑to‑day execution and strategic process improvement.

Preferred Skills

  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) designation.
  • Background in healthcare or similarly regulated, high‑complexity environments.
  • Experience with enterprise cloud payroll systems (e.g., Oracle, Workday, SAP, UKG)
  • Experience transitioning outsourced payroll functions in‑house or optimizing shared services models.
