1st Class Pipe Welder
Job description
Purpose:
Colonna's Shipyard is looking for a skilled 1st Class Pipe Welder to join our day shift operations in Norfolk, VA. If you're passionate about welding and have extensive experience, we want you on our team!
Job Responsibilities:
• Perform high-quality welding on metal components according to blueprints, diagrams, and work orders using electric arc-welding equipment.
• Prepare materials for welding by ensuring surfaces are clean and free from contaminants, utilizing tools like wire brushes and grinders.
• Execute welds in a variety of positions (flat, horizontal, vertical, overhead) and across multiple materials using several welding processes.
• Fabricate complex structures, including brackets, panels, and beams from detailed drawings.
• Set up and operate equipment, ensuring optimal performance and safety throughout the welding process.
• Expertly repair base metal products and welds while adhering to job specifications.
• Conduct air-arc back gouging, oxy-acetylene torching, and various welding techniques including GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding).
• Mark materials with job numbers and welder identification, ensuring accountability for all welds.
• Oversee the welding setup, including equipment maintenance and cleaning, to maintain high working standards.
• Supervise and mentor less-experienced welders, promoting good practices and workmanship.
• Conduct inspections of all welds and joint preparations to ensure compliance with quality standards.
• Maintain dimensional accuracy in projects to minimize distortions.
• Take on additional tasks as assigned to support team success.
Qualifications:
• Minimum of 7 years of Pipe Welding experience is required.
• Experience in physically demanding environments.
• At least 3 years of experience with SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding) or GTAW.
Desired Qualifications:
• Certifications in SMAW and GTAW are preferred.
• Ability to fuse inserts and weld various pipe materials is a plus.
Security Requirements:
• Must be able to obtain and maintain access to government installations (DBIDS).
Travel Requirements:
• Minimal travel anticipated (10% or less).
Physical Requirements:
• Must be able to lift and carry at least 20 lbs.
• Able to work in confined spaces and at heights, including aboard ships.
• Capable of enduring extreme temperatures and other challenging conditions.
• Frequent exposure to noise and may require use of a respirator and protective gear.
