1st Class Combination Welder/Fitter - Evening Shift

Position Overview:
Colonna's Shipyard is actively seeking a skilled 1st Class Combination Welder/Fitter to join our 2nd Shift operations in Norfolk, VA. This is an exciting opportunity for individuals who are passionate about welding and shipbuilding, eager to contribute to our innovative projects.
Key Responsibilities:
• Utilize welding equipment to join metal components based on blueprints, welding symbols, and verbal directions.
• Interpret and lay out blueprints, ensuring correct fitting and tack welding of both aluminum and steel assemblies.
• Install structural items on shipways and erect units as required.
• Physically assemble structural elements and prefabricated panels both on-site and during prefabrication.
• Prepare surfaces for welding, eliminating any contaminants including scale, rust, and grease.
• Execute various welding processes in multiple positions, including flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead.
• Operate manual or semi-automatic welding machines, applying techniques such as SMAW, GMAW, and FCAW.
• Prepare weld joints and workpieces using appropriate cleaning tools and methods.
• Perform joint preparation for NDT processes and carry out repairs as necessary.
• Adhere to safety protocols by using personal protective equipment like hard hats, safety glasses, and respirators.
• Guide and mentor apprentices and junior welders on technical skills and job assignments.
• Work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining high quality in production welding inspections.
• Fulfill other responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications:
• Minimum of seven (7) years' experience in Welding and Shipfitting.
• Demonstrated proficiency in multi-pass, all-position fillet and butt welds using various welding techniques.
• Solid understanding of welding tools, techniques, and safety practices.
• Ability to effectively collaborate with team members and comprehend technical sketches and templates.
• Capability to work in confined spaces and navigate through manholes.
• Reliability and a strong attendance record are essential.
• Ability to follow detailed instructions accurately.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Technical training in welding or related fields is a plus.
• Experience in Steel America fabrication shop is beneficial.
• Familiarity with new Aircraft Carrier and Submarine construction.
Security Requirements:
• Must have the ability to access government facilities and obtain a DBIDS clearance.
• US Citizenship is required for this position.
Physical Requirements:
• Able to lift and transport heavy equipment, at least 20 lbs.
• Physical agility to work in various environments, including extreme temperatures and confined spaces.
• Willingness to perform tasks under high heat, humidity, and noise conditions.
• Regularly operate equipment such as trucks and man-lifts.
• Engage in various movements including standing, walking, climbing, bending, and crawling.
