1st Class Combination Welder/Fitter - 2nd Shift Opening

Overview:
Colonna's Shipyard is on the lookout for a skilled 1st Class Combination Welder/Fitter to join our dynamic team for 2nd Shift operations. This is an exciting opportunity for individuals who are passionate about welding and shipbuilding in Norfolk, VA.
Responsibilities:
• Utilize welding equipment to join metal components, following specifications from blueprints, welding procedures, or verbal instructions.
• Interpret blueprints and lay out materials accurately, ensuring quality and precision in tacking small assemblies, aluminum, and steel foundations.
• Assemble and install structural items on shipways, contributing to the creation and integrity of naval vessels.
• Prepare surfaces for welding, eliminating impurities such as rust, grease, and moisture.
• Execute welding processes in various positions, including flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead.
• Operate and maintain welding equipment across several welding methods, such as SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, and submerged arc welding.
• Perform clean-up tasks on weld joints and workpieces, utilizing appropriate tools and techniques.
• Set up and adjust welding equipment, selecting the correct electrodes based on the materials involved.
• Conduct grinding and joint preparation for NDT processes as necessary.
• Engage in training and mentoring of apprentices and fellow welders.
• Work independently with minimal supervision while ensuring a high rate of first-pass production welding inspections.
• Adhere to safety standards by wearing the necessary personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Perform additional tasks as assigned to support shipyard operations.
Qualifications:
• Minimum of seven (7) years of combined welding and shipfitting experience.
• Proven ability to perform multi-pass, all-position fillet and butt welds using SMAW, GMAW, and FCAW.
• Strong knowledge of welding techniques, including mirror welding and temperature control.
• Experience with hand tools and instruments relevant to welding and shipbuilding.
• Effective interpersonal skills to collaborate with team members.
• Ability to understand weld sequence sketches and templates.
• Capable of working in confined spaces and accessing difficult areas.
• Reliable attendance and strong work ethic.
• Ability to follow directions precisely.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Technical training or experience in a Steel America fabrication shop.
• Experience in new aircraft carrier or submarine construction.
Security and Physical Requirements:
• Must be eligible for access to Government facilities and secure a DBIDS.
• U.S. citizenship is required for this position.
• Physical agility to lift, carry, and transport heavy materials, with consistent lifting of 20 lbs or more.
• Comfortable working in various environments, including confined spaces, extreme temperatures, and under industrial conditions.
• Frequent exposure to noise from machinery and equipment.
• Willingness to operate equipment such as trucks and forklifts.
