Medical Scientist Grade 3 – Cellular Therapy / Cryopreservation

Locations: Epworth Freemasons (East Melbourne) & Epworth Cryopreservation Facility (Richmond)

We’re now seeking an experienced Medical Scientist Grade 3 to join our Cellular Therapy Unit and support our advanced cryopreservation and cell therapy services.

The Opportunity

This role plays a key part in delivering a high-quality, compliant and innovative cryopreservation laboratory service, supporting both clinical care and cutting-edge research, including CAR T-cell clinical trials. You will work closely with haematologists, researchers, nursing teams and external partners to ensure best-practice laboratory outcomes for Epworth patients.

This is a a full‑time, fixed‑term opportunity with a view to extend, ideal for a scientist seeking exposure to advanced cellular therapies in a collaborative tertiary healthcare environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform cellular product manufacturing, testing and quality activities in line with NPAAC, ISO 15189 and cGMP requirements
  • Support daily cryopreservation workflows including product receipt, tracking, manufacture, testing and release
  • Contribute to clinical trial activities, including CAR T-cell trials (GCP compliant)
  • Participate in internal and external quality assurance, validation and audit activities
  • Ensure accurate documentation, reporting and adherence to QMS and SOPs
  • Maintain laboratory equipment, support OH&S practices and participate in on-call rosters as required
  • Communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders to support patient-centred care

Epworth Freemasons has recently upgraded and expanded its operating theatres and admissions facilities, along with major refurbishments of patient rooms and building infrastructure.

About You

You are an experienced Medical Scientist who brings strong technical capability, attention to detail and a collaborative mindset. You are confident working in regulated laboratory environments and thrive in settings where quality, safety and innovation are paramount.

You will have:

  • Bachelor of Applied Science (Medical Science) or equivalent
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in cryopreservation processing and/or cell therapies
  • Demonstrated scientific competence and data management skills
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to work autonomously and within multidisciplinary teams

Desirable:

  • Experience with ISO 15189 and NATA-accredited services
  • Exposure to haemato-oncology, flow cytometry or aseptic techniques
  • Experience supporting clinical trials (including GCP environments)
