Job Description

U.S. Bank is looking for a banking professional to join our Sponsor Finance Group (SFG) as a credit underwriting PM.

The Sponsor Finance Group (SFG) is a specialized lending arm within U.S. Bank’s Corporate & Commercial Banking Commercial Products Group. SFG focuses on providing a multitude of senior debt products to middle market and large-cap private equity sponsors to execute acquisitions, mergers, recapitalizations, and other growth initiatives. SFG is a national platform comprising over 25 professionals throughout the country with a primary presence in New York and Minneapolis.

As part of the SFG underwriting and portfolio management team, you will monitor credit risk for your assigned clients/borrowers and underwrite credit exposure to successfully manage credit relationships that contribute directly to revenue goals and business objectives. It is expected that the alignment of deals will include originations and new lending opportunities and transactions, as well as oversight of existing deals and renewals as part of ongoing portfolio management.

Primary Accountabilities include

  • Perform LBO / financial modeling (historical and pro forma cash flow and credit analysis modeling; DCF, sensitivity modeling) to facilitate evaluation of new transaction opportunities and ongoing portfolio review/monitoring.
  • Perform on-going / quarterly borrower performance reviews / analysis and prepare quarterly monitoring reports and provide internal credit rating recommendations based on borrower performance.
  • Prepare and assist in the presentation of new opportunity screening memos and new borrower credit approval memos / write-ups, as well as preparing and presenting amendment / incremental financing recommendations.
  • Conduct borrower market diligence, borrower financial analysis, assessing key credit risk, to determine appropriate credit recommendations as part of the new borrower evaluation process.
  • Develop an understanding for SFG credit / underwriting policy and maintain accountability of oversight for assigned portfolio and quality of underwriting.

As a subject matter expert, you will leverage your industry experience to effectively collaborate with Relationship Managers, participate in client meetings and presentations, identify needs and business opportunities, and recommend appropriate solutions for U.S. Bank customers.

Approximately 10% business travel may be needed.

This position will be located in the Minneapolis office and will have a hybrid work arrangement. Team members who are in a hybrid role typically spend three days a week at a U.S. Bank location, while having flexibility on their work location for the other working days.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • 4+ years of related experience

Preferred Skills/Experience

  • 2+ years of work experience in corporate finance, public accounting, senior credit (commercial, corporate, capital markets), mezzanine lending, and other similar backgrounds
  • Solid foundation in general accounting principles, understanding of financial statements, financial analysis, and corporate finance
  • Self-starter with willingness to work hard under pressure, while also developing ways to work smarter (assist in the improvement of tools, models, processes, etc.)
  • Team player and strong collaboration as well as ability to work independently and with limited direction
  • Willingness to learn different industries and company profiles, and about banking, sponsor finance, capital markets, and the private equity landscape
  • Comfortable working with ambiguity
  • Highly proficient in Excel, PowerPoint, and Word
