About the Job
The Plant Manager is responsible for managing the operations of the Aromatics Plant at Reliance's Jamnagar DTA site to achieve production, yield, quality, and reliability targets while maintaining a safe and incident-free operating environment in line with the company's HSE standards. The Aromatics Plant produces Paraxylene, Benzene, and Ortho-xylene through UOP and BP licensed technologies (CCR Platforming, Parex, Isomar, Tatoray, Sulfolane, and associated xylene fractionation), feeding the downstream PTA / PET value chain and merchant markets.
The role aligns plant operations with the site's overall operations plan, monitors day-to-day activities, controls process and product quality, and leads by example in the deployment of HSE standards across the complex. The Plant Manager engages and develops the operations team to drive continuous improvement of the facility and its capabilities.
Job Accountabilities
Operations & Process Management
Oversee day-to-day operations of the Aromatics Plant – CCR, Parex, Isomar, Tatoray, Sulfolane, and xylene fractionation units – to achieve agreed production, yield, and quality targets.
Critically monitor process parameters and unit efficiencies through regular audits; highlight deviations and recommend corrective actions to sustain plant performance.
Maintain constant process vigilance to detect deviations in time and take corrective action before they impact safety, quality, or throughput.
Troubleshoot operational problems through structured analysis; investigate failures and incidents and ensure recommendations are implemented to prevent recurrence.
Coordinate with the upstream refinery, downstream PTA plant, utilities & off-sites, and product movements teams to ensure smooth feed-to-product flow.
Production Planning & Cost
Achieve specific consumption norms for feed, chemicals, catalysts, and utilities as per budget.
Drive reduction in conversion cost on a sustainable basis through yield improvement, energy optimisation, and operational discipline.
Translate the monthly / quarterly production plan into shift-level execution; ensure on-spec rundown to PTA and product tankages.
Manage catalyst performance and life-cycle (reforming, isomerisation, transalkylation) in coordination with licensors; plan regenerations and change-outs.
Health, Safety & Environment
Execute all activities as per safety norms (ZT-LPR rules) with zero accident level as the standing expectation.
Own Process Safety Management for the complex – PHA / HAZOP, MOC, PSSR, mechanical integrity, and incident investigation.
Ensure full compliance with Factories Act, PESO, MoEFCC / CPCB / GPCB consent norms, and RIL HSE standards; act as Incident Commander during plant emergencies.
Drive a strong safety culture through visible field leadership, audits, and competency assurance of shift teams.
Reliability, Maintenance & Turnarounds
Deliver mechanical availability targets through structured reliability practices, criticality reviews, and timely maintenance interventions.
Plan and execute turnarounds and major shutdowns – scope, schedule, budget, contractor management, and safe start-up.
Lead the commissioning, pre-commissioning, and start-up activities of any new units or revamps within the complex, ensuring all systems are functioning optimally before full-scale operations.
Conduct performance guarantee trials of package units and the overall plant to meet expected performance and efficiency targets.
Projects & Technology
Coordinate erection, commissioning, and execution of new projects, revamps, and debottlenecking within the complex.
Effective interaction with RTG / CTS (Reliance Technology Group / Corporate Technical Services) on improvements in technology, catalysts, and process schemes.
Manage relationships with process licensors (UOP, BP) on performance, troubleshooting, and audits.
Drive implementation of digitalisation technologies rolled out at site, including advanced process control, alarm management, and predictive maintenance.
Governance & Leadership
Coordinate the activities of the Site Apex Committee and ensure that all decisions taken by the Committee are implemented.
Lead and manage plant staff including production, process, shift, and technical services managers; ensure effective communication, coordination, and execution of production goals.
Build capability through structured training, competency assurance, and succession planning for board operators, engineers, and managers.
Manage contractor workforce in line with site HR / IR policy.
Skills Required (Knowledge and Skills)
Strong process knowledge of aromatics technologies (UOP and BP licensed processes) and technical competence to facilitate operating plants in achieving budgeted quality and yield targets.
Production planning skills and ability to manage trade-offs across feed, energy, yields, and reliability.
Communication skills – clear, direct, and effective with shift teams, peers, leadership, and external stakeholders.
Discreet and ethical in conduct.
Conflict management and problem solving.
Time management and business acumen.
Strong team building, people engagement, and decision-making in operational settings.
Familiarity with industry-standard equipment and instrumentation.
Understanding of people and capability to train, assign tasks, and optimise manpower for productivity.
Key Attributes (Experience and Qualifications)
Degree / Post Graduation in Chemical Engineering or equivalent.
17+ years of experience in petrochemical or refining operations, with specific operating experience in aromatics units (CCR Platforming, Parex, Isomar, Tatoray, Sulfolane, xylene fractionation) being mandatory.
Hands-on operating experience with UOP and BP licensed aromatics technologies, including performance guarantee trials and licensor audits.
Demonstrated experience of leading at least one major turnaround / shutdown.
Minimum 4 years in a Unit Head / Operations Head / Deputy Plant Head role.
Reliance Industries Limited is an equal-opportunity employer.
