Job description

As our Specialist Resource Estimation Geologist your responsibilities will include but not limited to:

Mining Operation and Resource Reporting Cycles:

  • Adhere to all safety, health and environmental practices and requirements.
  • Mining Operation/Project Planning Cycle: Establish and maintain a comprehensive and validated borehole database. Generate representative geological solids models and develop detailed long-term geological block models to inform strategic mine planning for operational and project-based contexts.
  • Resource and Reserve Reporting Cycle: Compile and prepare comprehensive Mineral Resource Reports annually, accurately representing the Mineral Resources of mining operations/projects. Ensure adherence to Kumba and Anglo-American Resource and Reserve reporting standards in compliance with the SAMREC Code.

Business Systems Management:

  • Produce relevant outputs and documents for utilisation by supervisors and team members, ensuring clarity and accessibility of information.
  • Oversee system access management and implement necessary document edits to maintain operational efficiency.
  • Design, implement, and continually enhance data and model archival processes to ensure the integrity and accessibility of geological data.

Borehole Data Management:

  • Rigorously check and validate data received from the exploration team to ensure accuracy and reliability.
  • Establish a systematic feedback loop with the exploration team regarding validation findings, promoting continuous improvement in data quality.

Geological Interpretation and Analysis:

  • Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of local geology, ore genesis, and tectonostratigraphic relationships by consulting relevant solids and block models and collaborating with Exploration and Production Geologists.
  • Conduct in-depth analyses of all pertinent geological data to inform and refine geological block models, ensuring they meet business requirements.

Solids Modelling:

  • Develop and update three-dimensional solids models based on the latest validated exploration data, ensuring that models accurately reflect the current geological understanding.
  • Guarantee that solids models are 100% compliant with exploration data, correctly positioned spatially, and devoid of gaps or overlaps between modelled domains.
  • Prioritize business and project planning timelines to deliver geological block models efficiently. Enhance modelling processes to enable dynamic ore body modelling through representative solutions (e.g., RMSP).
  • Maintain ongoing and robust interactions with the Metallurgy and long-term mine planning teams to communicate any geological model changes that may affect Mineral Resources, Mineral Reserves, and the Life of Mine (LOM) calculations.

Resource Modelling:

  • Execute comprehensive geostatistical processes to create and update geological models as per business needs, including Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA), variography, Quantitative Neighbourhood Analysis (QKNA), grade estimation, model validation, and geological confidence classification.
  • Conduct formal reviews to present key geological findings and model changes to the Geosciences leadership team, emphasising the identification of opportunities to create value through enhanced geological block model insights.
  • Ensure practical spatial reconciliation of geological block models with previous iterations, facilitate clear communication of changes, and maintain alignment with the value chain of geological modelling clients.

Mineral Resource Reporting:

  • Engage in the Mineral Resource reporting process for Kumba Iron Ore as required, contributing to high-quality reports.
  • Accurately extract and tabulate Mineral Endowment data from geological block models, adhering to relevant business constraints to populate Kumba and Anglo-American Mineral Resource reporting templates.
  • Compile comprehensive Mineral Endowment statements for mining operations/projects, ensuring compliance with the company’s Resource and Reserve reporting standards.
  • Upon achieving the necessary competencies defined by the SAMREC Code, provide attestations for Mineral Resource estimates before peers and undertake sign-offs as a Competent Person on Mineral Endowment statements.

Time Management and Accountability:

  • Ensure all deliverables meet established deadlines and maintain a high-quality standard.
  • Take ownership of all deliverables, ensuring transparency and responsibility in reporting progress and results.

Continuous Improvement Initiatives:

  • Strategically plan and implement continuous improvement activities to enhance model representability and accelerate ore body modelling turnaround times.

This role is in Technical & Strategy (T&S) department on a Band 6 (D4/D5) level reporting to the Principal Geodata.

  • Grade 12 / N3 Technical

  • Post-graduate qualification in the geostatistical field is preferred
  • Member of SACNASP or other recognised professional organisations
  • SA Drivers Licence

Technical Knowledge

  • Knowledge of how to generate targets for drilling campaigns with 6-8 years of relevant experience.
  • Understand memo and technical reporting required in relevant projects.
  • Knowledge of data validation and exploration of data activities, estimation, and variance analysis processes.
  • Familiarity with geostatistical evaluation processes.
  • Understand the mine planning cycle.
  • Understand basic financial metrics and budgeting tools.
  • Knowledge of risk management techniques and critical controls.
  • Familiarity with the SAMREC code and all legal, environmental, occupational health and safety, and risk management standards and best practices.
  • Understand key value drivers within the discipline's value chain and interdependence of critical levers.
  • Knowledge of project management fundamentals.
  • Awareness of innovative technologies and their impact on functional activities within the scope of the role.
  • Familiarity with business improvement tools and techniques.
