Job description
The Transition to Specialty Program Anaesthetics/PACU provides a strong foundation for delivering high-quality patient care within the perioperative environment. The program will commence on 24 August 2026 and offers an ideal pathway for registered nurses with experience in other areas to gain the knowledge and skills required to work in theatre and anaesthesia settings.
Working under the guidance of experienced perioperative nurses, you will develop clinical competence across a range of areas, including patient preparation and admission for surgery, theatre setup for anaesthesia, maintaining sterile environments, assisting anaesthetists with airway management and patient induction, responding to emergencies, and recovering patients in the post-anaesthesia care unit (PACU). Through structured mentorship, you will learn to prioritise patient safety, manage complex equipment, and remain calm under pressure in high-acuity clinical situations.
This position is designed to support your transition into a confident and independent anaesthetic and recovery nurse. You will actively participate in targeted theatre orientations and specialised professional development study days, enabling you to build expertise in pre-operative, intra-operative, and immediate post-operative care.
The program includes a structured training framework with dedicated study days, supernumerary time, online modules, and debriefing sessions to support your learning in this specialty area. By embracing a continuous learning mindset and working collaboratively with surgeons, anaesthetists, and the broader multidisciplinary team, you will develop a strong, highly technical foundation for a rewarding career in perioperative nursing
Opportunities Available in:
- Anaesthesia and PACU – 6 months rotation in each area and then after rotating specialties every week.
About You
You will be a trained nurse with exceptional customer service, confident communication, and strong interpersonal skills. You will also demonstrate:
- Current registration with AHPRA (Registered Nurses) – minimum 1 year experience required
- Recent acute care or surgical ward experience (preferable)
- Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities
- Flexibility to work a 7-day rotating roster and participating in on-call roster
- Commitment to teamwork, patient safety, and professional growth.
- A genuine interest in a career in perioperative specialisation
