Job description
The Transition to Specialty Program (Scrub/Scout) provides a strong foundation for delivering safe, high-quality patient care within the perioperative environment. The program will commence on 24 August 2026 and offers an ideal pathway for registered nurses with experience in other clinical areas to develop the specialised knowledge and technical skills required for practice in the operating theatre
Working under the guidance of experienced perioperative nurses, you will develop clinical competence in both scrub and scout roles. This includes preparing and maintaining a sterile field, instrument handling and accountability, anticipating surgical team needs, and supporting surgical procedures across a range of specialties. You will also gain experience in patient positioning, surgical counts, infection prevention, and ensuring the availability and functionality of specialised surgical equipment.
As a scrub/scout nurse, you will coordinate the broader theatre environment, facilitate communication among the surgical team, manage workflow, and ensure timely access to additional instruments and resources. Through structured mentorship, you will learn to prioritise patient safety, maintain strict aseptic technique, and respond effectively in dynamic and high-pressure situations.
This position is designed to support your transition into a confident and independent perioperative scrub/scout nurse. You will participate in targeted theatre orientations and specialised professional development study days, building your knowledge across pre-operative preparation, intra-operative care, and immediate post-operative processes.
The program includes a structured training framework with dedicated study days, supernumerary shifts, online learning modules, and supported debriefing sessions to guide your development in this specialty area. By embracing continuous learning and working collaboratively with surgeons, anaesthetists, and the multidisciplinary team, you will establish a strong technical and clinical foundation for a rewarding career in perioperative nursing.
