The Sign Fabricator supports Base Support Operations by designing, fabricating, installing, and repairing signage used throughout the installation. This includes facility identification signs, directional signage, safety/traffic signs, informational posters, decals, stencils, and custom graphics. The Sign Fabricator ensures all signage meets base standards, visibility requirements, regulatory guidelines, and mission‑support needs.
Responsibilities
- Design, fabricate, and install a wide range of signs including building identifiers, safety/OSHA signs, vehicle decals, directional signs, traffic control signs, informational boards, and specialty graphics.
- Operate sign-making equipment such as vinyl cutters, plotters, laminators, engraving machines, and printing equipment.
- Create layouts, lettering, and graphic designs based on work orders, base signage standards, and customer requirements.
- Fabricate sign panels, frames, and mounting structures using carpentry, painting, and finishing skills.
- Install signs in indoor and outdoor locations, including mounting to buildings, posts, walls, fences, and support structures.
- Perform maintenance and repair of existing signs, including repainting, re-lettering, replacing damaged components, and updating outdated information.
- Produce pavement markings, stencils, and painted traffic markings in parking lots, roadways, and designated operational areas.
- Prepare surfaces by sanding, cleaning, priming, and finishing for painting or decal application.
- Ensure all signage complies with base guidelines, ADA requirements, OSHA/ANSI standards, and installation branding policies.
- Maintain inventory of materials including vinyl rolls, substrates, paints, fasteners, reflective sheeting, and hardware.
- Use CMMS platforms such as MAXIMO to document work orders, update status, track materials, and maintain accurate records.
- Work with base engineers, safety personnel, and facility managers to meet mission‑critical signage needs in a timely manner.
- Follow all base safety standards including PPE usage, lockout/tagout (when required), ladder safety, and hazardous materials handling.
- Support emergency or high‑priority signage needs during base events, operations, or facility changes.
- Maintain clean and organized tools, equipment, and work vehicles.
- May be required to work weekends, holidays, early and late shifts N/A
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education / Certifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Must have a driver’s country of origin license.
- Ability to obtain a U.S. Government Motor Vehicle Operator’s License
Experience
- At least two (2) years’ experience automotive painting, industrial coating, or body shop repair required
Skills & Technology Used
- English proficiency Reading & Speaking Level 2, Writing Level 1
- Knowledge of modern refinishing techniques, primers, coatings, corrosion control, and color matching
- Ability to operate spray equipment and perform detailed surface prep
- Understanding of military or fleet painting standards (e.g., CARC or similar coatings) preferred
- Familiarity with safety standards regarding HAZMAT, PPE, ventilation, and paint booth operations
- Ability to lift, bend, kneel, climb ladders, and work in varied environments
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship
Material & Equipment Directly Used
- Vinyl plotters, cutters, laminators, printing equipment
- Engraving machines, stencil cutters, and wide‑format printers
- Carpentry and fabrication tools: saws, drills, nailers, sanders, routers, cutting tools
- Painting and finishing tools: sprayers, rollers, brushes, masking materials
- Sign materials: substrates (aluminum, plastic, composite board), reflective sheeting, decals, paints, laminates
- Ladders, lifts, scaffolding, and material‑handling carts
- PPE including gloves, safety glasses, steel‑toe boots, respirators, and hearing protection
- CMMS (MAXIMO or similar) via tablet or computer
Working Environment
- Must be capable of working in an extreme weather condition with temperatures exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Indoor and/or outdoor environment with very adverse and harsh conditions (i.e., hot, wet, tropical environment with average temperatures of 130 degrees in the summer months).
- Includes some industrial production conditions as well.
- The worker is subject to both environmental conditions. Activities occur inside and outside.
- The worker is subject to noise. There is sufficient noise to cause the worker to shout in order to be heard about the ambient noise level.
Physical Activities
- Heavy work. Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Work may require heavy lifting, stooping, climbing, prolonged standing, prolonged sitting, and working with or in areas where potential could exist for exposure to physical, chemical, or biological agents.
- Employee use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required for some situations. PPE includes, but is not limited to, head, foot, torso, respiratory, vision, and hearing protective devices.
- Must comply with all Fire and Safety Regulations and post policies.
